n the beginning, University of Muhammadiyah Malang was the branch of the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta which was managed by Muhammadiyah Higher Education Foundation Jakarta/Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Muhammadiyah Jakarta with notary certificate R. Sihojo Wongsowidjaja at Jakarta No. 71 dated June 19, 1963. The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang was built on September 1965 by the Malang Muhammadiyah Leaders’ initiative, together with Faculty of Economics and Faculty of Law. These three faculties got “registered” status from the General Directorate of Higher Education, Department of Education and Culture in 1966 with the Circulating Letter Number: 68/B-Swt/P/1966 dated on December 30, 1966. The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education began its education with Religious Education Department.
Because of there was a policy of Penertiban Perguruan Tinggi Agama/Controlling of Religious Universities, in 1968 the Religious Affairs Education Department of the Faculty of Teacher and Training and Education registered to the Religious Affairs Department to be Faculty of Tarbiyah. This proposal was agreed by the Religious Affairs Department with the Religion Ministry Circulating Letter No. 50 1970.
In line with the Main Plan of Development of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang settled on February 14, 1976, in the beginning of 1977 FTTE opened General Education Department.
The demand of teachers who are not only good in knowledge, but also in Islamic science in the beginning of 1980’s encouraged the leaders of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in particular and the leaders of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang in general to develop FTEE by opening new study programs in 1983, namely Indonesian Language and Literature, Biology, Mathematics, and Pancasila Moral Education (now well known as Civic Education). In the same year, the General Education Department changed to be Curriculum and Technology of Education Department.
The next, the development of FTTE was focused on improving the quality of education and teaching on those five departments. Besides, in 1987 FTTE opened English Department.
In 1998, FTTE UMM held in-service training programs at the National Education Department and Religious Affairs Department environment. They were D2 teacher equalizing program, headmaster and school inspector certification, and Madrasah Aliyah Development Program. The society and governance trustworthiness to this faculty was continued, So, in 2006 FTTE UMM was pointed by the government to be the institution which held Long Distance Program for Undergraduate Program of Elementary School Teacher Education together with nine other Teacher Training Institutions. As the follow up of this trustworthiness, FTTE UMM opened Elementary School Teacher Education Program in 2007 based on the Diractor General of Higher Education of National Education Department’s Circulating Letter No. 1928/D/T/2007. The vision of this program is being leading department in producing the elementary school teacher candidates, who have good ethics, good moral, master science and technology and develop the education innovation.
